They may also be used to <\/span><b>support or sustain life,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alleviate disabilities, or modify physiological processes. Common examples include surgical instruments, diagnostic tools, and implantable devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><b>each country has specific regulatory definitions for medical devices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though these can vary slightly. However, while this type of permit is only necessary for certain categories of medical devices, such as some implants or high-risk products, it is highly recommended to consult with your <\/span><b>customs broker to determine the correct medical device tariff code and confirm whether your products will need an import permit.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For medical devices that include radiation sources, such as X-ray machines or radiopaque agents, an additional import permit issued by the <\/span><b>Comisi\u00f3n Nacional de Seguridad Nuclear y Salvaguardias (CNSNS) is required.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Case_2_%E2%80%93_For_third-party_manufacturing\"><\/span><b>Case 2 \u2013 For third-party manufacturing<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the medical device is <\/span><b>temporarily imported <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a third-party manufacturing process at any stage. That&#8217;s why the Secretar\u00eda de Econom\u00eda or IMMEX must issue the authorization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Case_3_%E2%80%93_For_personal_use\"><\/span><b>Case 3 \u2013 For personal use<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third case applies only to patients who need a medical device that is unavailable in Mexico. In these cases each patient must request the import permit directly to COFEPRIS by <\/span><b>submitting a valid medical prescription indicating the medical device<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> information and the quantity needed, the import permit will be limited to this quantity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Case_4_%E2%80%93_For_professional_use\"><\/span><b>Case 4 \u2013 For professional use<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next scenario applies to <\/span><b>medical devices intended for exclusive use by a physician<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This type of import permit is particularly useful for hospitals that require devices that are unavailable in Mexico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, <\/span><b>the physician must request the permit on behalf of the patient receiving treatment.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Legal documentation, such as the physician&#8217;s professional ID, must be submitted to COFEPRIS. Additional requirements apply if the device is classified as Class II or III or an X-ray device.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, <\/span><b>evidence must be provided to demonstrate that no comparable technology is available in Mexico to justify the importation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this, they must have a clinical research protocol approved by COFEPRIS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Case_6_%E2%80%93_Donations\"><\/span><b>Case 6 \u2013 Donations<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of permit is applicable when a<\/span><b> foreign organization donates a medical device to public, social, or private health institutions in Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The receiving organization must request the permit, specifying the device being imported and ensuring that the product will not be sold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Case_7_%E2%80%93_Previously_owned\"><\/span><b>Case 7 \u2013 Previously owned<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This scenario is particularly relevant for those importing <\/span><b>high-end or expensive medical devices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
